Maya temple 33, Yaxchilan 20 x 28 inches

These Maya watercolours were shown first at the National Arts Club in New York (kindly sponsored by Aer Lingus), and not long after that for two months at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico, (equally kindly sponsored by KLM). Apart from my own enthusiasm for the subject, I intended to replace and amplify, as far as I could, the fine work done by another Englishman, Frederick Catherwood, who visited the 13 then known Maya sites in the 1840s. His originals were lost in a warehouse fire in the USA, but happily they survive in the form of excellent lithographs.

My work on this project involved several field trips to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Belize, and led to another specialized interest of mine: the bird family Cracidae.
